2007

JANUARY

Army troops were deployed in the border town Tijuana to crack down on drug cartels smuggling cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana across the border into the United States.

Soldiers also entered police stations to check the documents and weapons of 100s of police officers after it was alleged that there is a corrupt network of police in the city supporting drug traffickers.

Police officers whose weapons had been confiscated refused to patrol the streets of Tijuana complaining that it was too dangerous (13 officers were shot to death in 2006).

The Tijuana Operation was the second after a crackdown in Michoacan since Calderon's vowed to crack down on organized crime.

2006

DECEMBER

Felipe Calderon takes office on December 1st.
