Terms Arellano Felix cartel -- One of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the country. Javier Arellano Felix -- leader of the Arellano Felix cartel, captured in August 2006. Michoacan -- Key transport state for cocaine, the country's most lucrative export drug. A government operation carried out in December 2006 in the province ended in the arrest of 80 suspected traffickers, the destruction of more than 5,000 marijuana fields and the confiscation of firearms, shells, grenades and vehicles. Operation Tijuana -- Federal operation implemented by Mexican President Felipe Calderon to crack down on cartels smuggling drugs through the border-city of Tijuana to the U.S. News Tijuana's drug trade has long been controlled by the Arellano Felix cartel, once one of the country's most powerful drug-trafficking organizations. In August, the Mexican government captured the cartel's alleged leader, Francisco Javier Arellano Felix setting off a mad grab by the cartel's rivals for shares of the business. Drug gangs were blamed for more than 2000 murders nationwide last year -- more than 300 deaths taking place in Michoacan and Tijuana.
