As an alternative to the representatives of the ruling Hamas Party (which does not recognize Israel), Israel's leaders have cultivated a relationship with the Palestinian Authority's more moderate President Mahmoud Abbas.

But discussions between Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Abbas have led to stalemates on a number of issues, among them are the following:

Olmert's (Israel's) demands:

  • Unconditional release of Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit who was kidnapped on June 25, 2006 setting off a series of battles between Palestinians and the Israeli Defense Force.

  • A halt to weapons smuggling from Egypt into Gaza.

  • An end to the sporadic firing of Kassam rockets from Gaza into Israel.

Abbas' (Palestinian Authority's) demands:

  • An end to Israeli military operations in the West Bank.

  • Broadening the informal cease-fire put in place in the Gaza Strip since November.

  • The lifting of Israeli and international economic sanctions as soon as a unity government is formed.
