December 21, 2007 Eid* al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) required by all Muslims at some point in their lives. The 3-day holiday commemorates Abraham's willingness to obey God by sacrificing his son Ishmael (unlike Christians and Jews, Muslims believe that Abraham nearly sacrificed Hagar's son, not Isaac who was born to Abraham's wife, Sarah). God stopped Abraham just before he wielded the fatal blow and allowed him to sacrifice a ram in his son's place. On Eid al-Adha, Muslims wear their finest clothes, pray in the mosques and sacrifice an animal, usually a sheep, to symbolize Abrahams sacrifice. *"Eid" is the Arabic word for "Festival"
