	On December 23, 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1737 demanding that Iran "suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities." Terms of Resolution 1737 Demands that Iran "suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, and work on all heavy water-related projects." Calls on all states to impose a ban on trade with Iran in goods related to its nuclear programs and ballistic missile delivery systems. Freezes the assets of 12 people and 11 companies alleged to be involved in uranium enrichment programs. Consequences Sixty days after implementation the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency provided the Security Council with a report detailing the status of Iran's nuclear program. Further sanctions were imposed in March, 2007 under the terms of UN Resolution 1747. The additional sanctions were non-military and could affect diplomatic and economic relations, as well as transportations and communications. Background All five permanent members of the United UN Security Council (US, Britain, France, Russia and China - as well as Germany) voted for Resolution 1737 after Iran failed to comply with UN Resolution 1696 which requested the full and sustained suspension of Iran's uranium enrichment activities. Objections It took 4 months to draft the resolution in order to override the objections of Russia and China. Iran's Response Iran maintains that it is not pursuing nuclear technology for military purposes (see decline in oil production) Iran's President Ahmadinejad says that Iran has the right to develop nuclear technology.
